If you run an automotive business or are interested in offering towing services for other people, then you could be thinking about investing in a tow truck. This might be a good idea. However, there are also dolly trailers that you can purchase and use to haul vehicles. These are a few signs that a dolly trailer might be a better investment for you than a tow truck, though.

You Have a Ute That Has Towing Ability

If you don't have a ute that can haul a dolly trailer, then you would need to invest in both a ute and a trailer, if you chose to take that route. In this case, some people like to purchase a tow truck that can be used for towing and that doesn't need to be pulled by anything. If you already have a ute that has the towing ability, however, then a dolly trailer might work out well for you.

You're Hoping to Keep Costs Low

Investing in a tow truck can be a wonderful investment, since you can get a lot of use out of a good tow truck, and you can hopefully make money from it. However, buying a tow truck is often much more expensive than simply buying a dolly trailer. Therefore, if you're looking to gain towing capability with minimal investment, a dolly trailer is probably what will work best.

You'll Be Hauling One Vehicle at a Time

Typically, a dolly trailer is only capable of hauling just one vehicle at a time. If you are only planning on transporting one vehicle at a time, then a dolly trailer might be more than sufficient for your needs. If you're going to be hauling multiple vehicles at a time, however — or if you just want to have the capacity and ability to do so, if needed — then you should consider investing in a tow truck. Be aware that some tow trucks can haul more vehicles at one time than others, however, so you'll need to specifically look for a tow truck that fits the bill.

You're Going to Be Hauling Smaller Vehicles

Lastly, you should think about the types of cars that you're going to be towing once you purchase your trailer or tow truck. If you're going to be towing larger vehicles — including vehicles that are longer in size or that are heavy — then you should know that a dolly trailer might not work well. If you're mostly going to be towing smaller passenger cars, on the other hand, a dolly trailer should work out well.
